The first three years of my career (1965 thru 1968) were spent as an apprentice billboard artist for Pacific Outdoor Advertising (no longer in existence). During this time it was my job to do hundreds of practice pictorial oil paintings, with subjects typical of the themes of outdoor advertising. These assignments were all copies (drawn by hand) from advertising ADs in magazines or other photos. These practice paintings were done six to eight feet high on rolls of butcher paper. Below I've listed links to a few of these practice paintings. I'm glad I kept photos of them for they were all discarded and each one was a teacher and friend that serves me still.
The finished handpainted billboard pictured above was one of my actual jobs when I became a journeyman. Oddly enough, it led to many things I would later do for the zoo.
