Acai Berry

The Acai Berry is relatively new to the healthy list of purple fruits in North America. The excitement apparently started with Dr. Pericone's research and his appearance on the Oprah TV Show. Here's a "Reader's Digest" synopsis of his recommendations;

During this appearance, Dr. Pericone's famous 10 super foods included the following:

Acaí

The fatty acid content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and we know, inflammation causes aging.

The Allium Family

Garlic, onions, leeks and chives contain flavonoids that stimulate the production of glutathione (the tripeptide that is the liver's most potent antioxidant). Glutathione enhances elimination of toxins and carcinogens, putting the Allium family of vegetables at the top of the list for foods that can help prevent cancer.

Barley

The fiber found in barley provides food for the beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. This is important as the "good" bacteria can crowd out the disease-causing bacteria in the intestinal tract, resulting in greater health and disease resistance.

Beans and Lentils

Beans are low in fat (except for soybeans), calories, and sodium, but high in complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber, and they offer modest amounts of essential fatty acids—mostly omega-6 (only soybeans have significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids). They are also an excellent source of protein, needing only to be combined with grains such as barley or oats to provide all the amino acids necessary to make a complete protein for vegetarians who do not have other sources of protein for their meals. Beans are extremely beneficial in an anti-diabetes diet because they rank low on the glycemic scale, which means that they do not cause the inflammatory, hunger-inducing spike in blood sugar levels associated with refined grains and baked goods.

Buckwheat

Buckwheat has more protein than rice, wheat, millet, or corn, and is high in the essential amino acids lysine and arginine, in which major cereal crops are deficient. Its unique amino acid profile gives buckwheat the power to boost the protein value of beans and cereal grains eaten the same day. Yet, buckwheat contains no gluten—the source of protein in true grains—and is therefore safe for people with gluten allergy or celiac disease.

Green Foods

Nutritionally, barley and wheatgrass are close cousins to dark green leafy vegetables, but offer far greater levels of "nutrient density." In other words, an ounce of these concentrated green foods contains much more of the beneficial phytonutrients found in an ounce of green vegetables.

Hot Peppers

All peppers contain compounds called capsaicinoids. This is especially true of chili peppers, which derive their spicy heat—as well as extraordinary anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-cancer, heart-healthy effects—from very high levels of capsaicinoids.

Nuts and Seeds

If you want to dramatically decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, control your weight without hunger pangs and reduce the visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin, do it with nuts, such as chopped almonds on your oatmeal or walnuts in your lunchtime salad.

Sprouts

Sprouts are a concentrated source of the living enzymes and "life force" that is lost when foods are cooked or not picked fresh from your own garden. Additionally, due to their high enzyme content, sprouts are also much easier to digest than the seed or bean from which they came.

Yogurt and Kefir

The fermented foods scientists consider "probiotic" are primarily yogurt and kefir. Fermented and cultured foods may well represent our first experience with foods that actively promote optimal health.

The legitimacy nearly ended there. As I proceeded with my investigation into this great nutritional find from South America I immediately came upon the great American syndrome of taking a little truth and hyping it to the hilt! There are at least a dozen new multi level marketing companies presently hawking this berry in their "healthy juice" line or equivalent product at about $50 per bottle. The presentations are delicious and the promises of great wealth are excessive, IF you join now and place your order for cases per month. Now I have no objection to network marketing per se as there are several very successful and reputable companies doing it. I even participate in a few myself. BUT my sole criteria is the product, its integrity and the company's emphasis on its value rather than the wealth derived from participating. IF you can dig deep enough into these web sites to the point where they reveal the actual ingredients, and some don't tell, you will find the hollowness of their promises. If you are dealing with an "incurable" disease as I am then you must make sure that you are drinking medicine and not just a beverage. The networking company Fruta Vida, for example, shows that their primary ingredient in their acai juice is actually apple juice, plus the puree of several berries and some Yerba Mate tea. No wonder it makes you feel good (their recipe), Yerba Mate's caffeine does this all by itself. And it doesn't cost $10 per serving. As tempted as I was to participate in these MLM programs I was turned away by the integrity of the product itself, even though priced high. The nutrition is diluted, by my standards. I have discovered my own source with better value even though I am not in the pipeline for great profits. My integrity in my research remains my priority. See below.

My investigation into this nutritional item includes these quotations:

"Acai (ah-sigh-ee) is an all natural energy fruit from Amazon palmberries. Wild Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açai tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature's perfect energy fruit. Açai is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential omegas (the good-for-you fatty acids).

Analysis reveals that Acai pulp contains:
A remarkable concentration of antioxidants, to help combat premature aging, with 10-30 times the anthocyanins (purple colored antioxidants) of red wine. A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols, to help promote cardiovascular system and digestive tract health. An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.

The result of this special blend is: Sustained energy and strength. Heightened sense of awareness and improved mental focus. A massive attack on vitality-robbing free radicals. Acai is a dense source of a particular class of flavonoids called anthocyanins (red-blue phenols with potent antioxidant properties). Anthocyanins are a group of phytochemicals in red wine thought to contribute to the French paradox, i.e. France has one of the lowest incidences of heart disease of any westernized society despite a prevalence of smoking and a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Acai pulp contains 10-30 times the anthocyanins of red wine per equal volume. The primary anthocyanin in Açai is cyanidin-3 glucoside. Cyanidin-3-glucoside has been found to be 3.5 times stronger than Trolox (vitamin E analogue) and the predominate anthocyanin found in red wine (malvadin-3-glucoside) in an ORAC analysis (measure of antioxidant capacity). Anthocyanins have been found to “exhibit numerous potential therapeutic effects including treatment of diabetic retinopathy and fibrocystic disease of the breast in human”. Other potential physiological effects of anthocyanins include radiation-protective, chemoprotective, vasoprotective and anti-inflammatory agents. The fatty acid ratio of Acai resembles that of olive oil, which is thought to be a contributing factor to the low incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean populations. 60 percent Oleic (Omega 9) a monounsaturated, essential fatty acid, helps lower LDL (harmful cholesterol) while maintaining HDL (beneficial cholesterol) levels. 12 percent Linoleic (Omega 6) a polyunsaturated, essential fatty acid, has been found to lower both LDL and HDL levels. Fatty acids aid in the transport and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins i.e. Vitamins A, E, D, and K (3). Acai contains valuable phytosterols. Sterols are components of plant cell membranes providing numerous benefits to the human body, namely the reduction of blood plasma cholesterol. Sterols are currently being used to treat symptoms associated with BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia). Preliminary evidence suggests that beta-sitosterol (the predominant sterol in Acai) may help prevent immune weakness resulting from severe physical stress. Acai is a good source of fiber -3.5 grams of dietary fiber in one serving of Acai. Fiber promotes a healthy digestive system. Low fiber in the American diet is thought to be a contributing factor to the high incidence of cancer and heart disease. Soluble fibers may help lower blood cholesterol; insoluble fibers are thought to help reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancers.
