First... Build Your Own Compost Bin!

Do this first.

By the time you get your growframe done you'll have the first soil that you will need from your own compost. It will also get you started toward the habit of recycling organic things.

This picture shows you a simple two part bin wired together using discarded shipping palettes.

As you use the soil from your compost it is a good idea to strain out the large pieces of twigs, stones, etc. that may not yet be broken down. It also becomes a pleasure to work with when strained.

Here you see a simple strainer I built out of hardware wire and some redwood boards.

Your compost mass should be a layered cake of differing materials.

I've also discovered that by adding red worms to my compost I don't need to stir it as often. Keep adding organic materials to the top for them to eat and they'll do a lot the work for you!
