Petrified Forest Museum Signage
1997: Thomas was hired by the Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona, to create an interpretive sign that identifies the plant and animal species featured in their large mural inside their museum. The image above shows you the existing mural in their exhibit. The image below shows the line drawing he created in Adobe Illustrator. The image below was incorporated into an identifying sign along with a legend.
An artististic interpretation of the Triassic World of the Petrified Forest in Northern Arizona.
The following illustrations represent museum dioramas that feature three of the prehistoric animals that once lived in the area now known as Petrified Forest. In each diorama a prehistoric forest is illustrated. This is the ancient forest that left the petrified trees and fossils for us to study today. These illustrations were all drawn freehand in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet. Please enjoy.
The Coelophysis was one of the earliest of the carnivorous dinosaurs. These agile animals, about six to eight feet in length, probably preyed upon smaller reptiles.
220 Million years ago, this fearsome predator, known to us as Postosuchus, had a heavy skull, sharp teeth and agile legs.
Placerias was a mammal-like reptile that lived in this area about 220 million years ago.
About these illustrations: The prehistoric animals and the forest scene were painted digitally by natural history artist Carl Dennis Buell. The composition and 3D platform were composed by author JHThomas. Do NOT copy. © by the authors.
Petrified Forest National Park is in northeast Arizona off of Interstate-40, about 25 miles east of the town of Holbrook, Arizona. The park offers some of the best and most accessible scenery of the Painted Desert which runs from the northern part of the park in a northwest direction towards Lake Powell. More good views of the Painted Desert can be found along US-89 north of Cameron, Arizona heading towards Page and Lake Powell. Additional views, as well as dinosaur tracks and fossils can be found by turning east on US-160. The dinosaur tracks exhibit is just west of Tuba City.
Petrified Forest National Park also features gorgeous fields of bejeweled fossilized wood, Indian ruins, and rock art. The park's roads offer many scenic vista points. Easy nature trails take you to many points of interest. Two visitor centers provide interpretation. There is a large rock shop selling petrified wood just outside the park's south entrance. Visit the park's official website for more information.
