Why Cropped Thumbnails?
In May 2009 we conducted a two year review of our clip art program.
We discovered that 80% of the visitors that used a search engine to discover us included the word "FREE" in their search. There was no intention of buying anything.
We also discovered that fewer than half of the people who placed an actual order ever paid for it. This created volumes of labor on our part and archives of useless documents with PayPal.
From this study we concluded that 80% of our visitors were people looking to get something for nothing without regard for the value of the talented people whose labor produced the images. This meant that less than 20% actually valued the work and wanted to pay for it. Our artists were not being paid!
The result of this study completely discouraged our contributing designers and submissions ceased.
The program is now revamped to mirror the nature of the public that visits us. FREE thumbnails, low resolution giveaways, are now published online, thanks to our new sponsors whose ADs appear on the same pages. The appetite for FREE work is now being fed, and we're actually seeing revenue from "looky loos" who do respond to advertising for something they do value.
In addition, the best illustrations, some with hundreds of hours of labor behind them, are now available to the professional user for a reasonable fee. We have established a "fit" at last for the market we're serving. Submissions from our artists have returned. New images are being added again. Buyers have returned. And, the enormous labor dealing with fraudulent orders, wasting our time, has been greatly diminished.
It just took us a while to come to grips with reality and how people behave on the internet. To the valued few we say THANKS.

Although we have many ways to search and share information, the current experience is fragmented, ineffective, and ultimately inefficient. On the search side, there are a growing number of disconnected sites for traditional search, niche interests, audio, video, imagery and more. On the sharing side, there is a universe of segregated social networks, blogs, real-time content, multi-media portals and more. This growing disconnection and segregation is the challenge we’ve decided to embrace. These images are the by-product of the 40-year career of natural history artist JHThomas.
CLIP ART... Serving Many Purposes!
Has it ever happened to you? Your project deadline is fast approaching and you find a gap that needs filling--you need an image quickly and you have little to no budget for artwork. If you doubt the value of high-quality illustrations, price a custom one. Even a simple black and white image by a proficient artist will typically cost at least $100. Color work by recognized illustrators begins in the thousands. In retrospect, good clip art is a bargain. Hence the need that has created millions of available clip art images on the internet. A good illustration is much more than mere ornamentation. At a minimum, it should grab attention and draw your reader into the message. At its best, it will express something words can't.
It is a trade off of course. Clip Art is free or inexpensive. It is also quick. But it is not exclusive. Dozens of people have used "your" image in individual ways. Clip art licensees should be aware of this when considering an image for a trademark or logo.
Resolution is an issue as well, referred to as dots per inch (DPI). This collection, although mostly derived from higher resolution originals - some were vector, is aimed primarily at the home use desktop publisher, making their own projects. We do not restrict your use of it however. Just be aware that these images are 150 dpi at a size that would generally fill a letterhead piece of paper. However, creativity abounds and our customer have used these for t-shirts, menus, brochures, engraving, embroidery, needlepoint, web pages and more, even tattoos! So enjoy! They are of higher quality than you normally find. JV
